why we celebrate it on June 14

Flag Day falls on June 14 this year, but why do we celebrate it on this date?

Since 1777, the American flag has symbolized freedom and unity for Americans and many others. Flag Day is a time to honor not just freedom, but also the emblem that represents it.

Here’s what you should know about this holiday:

Why June 14 for Flag Day?

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress chose the “Stars and Stripes” as the first American flag. This same flag flew when the Declaration of Independence was signed, symbolizing unity across the nation rather than separate flags for each state.

The flag has gone through some changes since then, notably adding 37 stars.

President Woodrow Wilson officially recognized Flag Day on May 30, 1916, through a presidential proclamation. Although it was celebrated before, he made it an official observance.

Is there mail on Flag Day?

Yes, Flag Day isn’t a federal holiday, so the U.S. Post Office, banks, and schools will remain open.

Who designed the American flag?

While many attribute the flag’s creation to Betsy Ross, there’s no proof she did. According to the History Channel, Ross wasn’t credited until after her death.

However, we do know who designed the modern American flag. In 1958, Bob G. Heft included 50 stars on his class project flag, anticipating Alaska and Hawaii joining the U.S. After getting a B-, he sent it to the White House. Two years later, President Dwight D. Eisenhower invited him to D.C. to adopt his design.

Why red, white, and blue?

In 1782, the Congress of the Articles of Confederation assigned meaning to the flag’s colors: red for valor and hardiness, white for purity and justice, and blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

What is National Flag Week?

It’s celebrated during Flag Day week. In 1966, Congress asked the president to designate the week of Flag Day as National Flag Week, encouraging citizens to display the flag.

President Joe Biden, on June 7, encouraged observing this period with pride, honoring American spirit, history, and values.

Flag etiquette on Flag Day?

Traditionally, the flag flies from sunrise to sunset, or if at night, it must be properly illuminated. When raising or lowering it, or when it passes in parade, people should stand at attention facing it, with their right hand over their heart.

American flag rules?

Apart from not letting it touch the ground, there are several other rules:

  • Don’t fly it upside down except in emergencies.
  • Don’t carry it flat or use it for carrying items.
  • Don’t wear it as clothing.
  • Keep it clean and don’t use it as a cover.
  • Let it fall free; don’t fasten or tie it.
  • Don’t draw or mark it.
  • Don’t fly it in bad weather unless it’s an all-weather flag.
